What a Difference a Day Makes

July tenth dawned looking lovely. Not to be discouraged that my water pump went on the fritz,
off I went to “The Gardens of Huron”, Eastnor Horticultural Society‘s 6th
bi-annual garden tour, this year featuring gardens on the Huron side of the Peninsula. Not only
were we blessed with a glorious day, but the host gardeners had responded to the invitation to be
visited by doing extra-ordinary gardening to produce lovely gardens, each individually characteristic
of their stewardship and beautiful.
It isn’t just me saying so, the visitors exclaimed it also. I hope the pictures tell the story, but as
one visitor exclaimed, “How did you ever find these gardens, they are all hidden?”
And isn’t that a Peninsula truth? You have to look behind the hedge, behind the house,
into the bush to see what has been creatively, in conjunction with the beauties of nature, cultured.
I opened a high class ‘House and Garden’ type of magazine while waiting for the dentist
and looking at the gardens from across Canada realized, these city editors have no idea what is in their
own neighbour’s yard. What beautiful gardens we have on the Bruce, and what clever gardeners.
