Founded in 1946, the Garden Club of Toronto is a registered charitable organization. It has played a key role in designing and planting gardens that beautify the city and environs as well as providing outreach and educational programming. Since its inception, the Club has directed in excess of $3 million to the beautification of some of the local areas' renowned gardens together with plantings for major public institutions. In 1958, the Club founded and provided ongoing funding for the Civic Garden Centre, known today as the Toronto Botanical Garden.
In 1997, the Garden Club of Toronto, with Landscape Ontario, sponsored the first Canada Blooms Flower Show, the highly successful Toronto Spring Flower Show that provides excellence in horticulture and design. Both organizations continue to play major roles in this annual flower show.
|

Started in 1973, Landscape Ontario Horticultural Trades Association (LOHTA) is a vibrant association representing over 2000 horticultural professionals. Our members include landscape, maintenance and snow management contractors, landscape designers, lawn care operators, garden centre owners, arborists, nursery growers, interior landscapers, and irrigation and landscape lighting contractors.
LOHTA members have a commitment to maintain confidence and trust in the profession of horticulture and to encourage and support education and research within the horticultural field. LOHTA also helps fulfill its pledge to elevate the green industry and enhance our environment through various public events like Canada Blooms, and participation in local home shows and community events. Members of LOHTA's nine regional chapters donated time and materials worth over $500,000 last year through projects to green their communities.

It was evident as soon as you entered the Toronto Convention Centre that the ecomony was having an effect on the show. You are normally greeted by two very large, elaborate floral arrangements, one on either side of the escalators, teasing you of what lies ahead as you descend to the lower levels and the real action. Well, the floral display sponsored by Sobeys this year was a forebearer of what lay ahead.

As you descended the first set of escalators to the 600 Level, it was, as usual, as if you were entering a flower market at the height of the growing season. It is the Pick Ontario Avenue, where a few of the 650 Ontario greenhouse farmers, who employ approximately 10,000 people in our province, displayed their wares. |

Descending an escalator again, you were greeted by a couple of trees adorned with small globes of white Hyacinths. Apart from that, the hallway was next to empty except for a few tables and chairs to allow you to have a bit to eat from the two cafes.

Now, down another set of escalators to the 800 Level and what we
came for, but here again the hallways are next to empty, unlike previous years. Never mind, the real attraction is in the exhibit hall.
The main entrance is schrouded in black material and lit by multi-coloured LED lights shining on white
flowers in white urns sitting on black pedistals and some water
features. |

The water stream shown in
Entrance-5 is from a special jet and pump that propells the water about six feet through the air. There was a guard standing close by to prevent children (young and old) from putting their hands in the water to prove it was not flowing through a tube. |

The children were having a whale of a time building their own evergreen forest. Every so oftern some big person would come around and hang all the trees back on the rack, where they didnt stay very long. |

STONE-LINKs very classy catalogue challenges can you tell the difference? and the answer to that is NO! I had a discussion with a woman over whether it was real or artifical stone and in the end we both agreed that it was real. Just to make sure, I asked one of the representatives, and we were wrong – it was manufactured stone. There motto is PERFECTING NATURE – PRESERVING NATURE. These stones are made from recycled material. An on-line catalogue is available at http://stone-link.com/index.html |
